[Ecology Conservation] Colorful Struggles of Camellias in Phoenix Nature Education Park Indicates the Successful Ecological Conservation of NTU Experimental Forest Office (Chinese Version)

CNA (2011/01/15) NTU Experimental Forest Phoenix Nature Education Park spent a lot of effort on the conservation of the native species of camellias during the past few years. Between January 15 and the Chinese New Year (February 6), a camellias expo will take place in the park. The colorful struggles of these camellias are prepared to receive the visitors.

The NTU Experimental Forest Office points out, Phoenix Nature Education Park in Lugu Township, Nantou County, which was previously called Phoenix Tea Farm, is the cradle of Taiwan Frozen Peak (Dong Ding) Oolong. In order to underscore this history, the park determines to spend effort on the species conservation of camellias. By now, a camellia specimen garden has been built and thirteen native species have been collected and preserved in the park. The park also tries to develop new species.

The collection of the specimen garden include more than three hundred species of camellias, including the time-honored Red Camellia, Yunnan Camellia (Camellia reticulata) and the rare Golden Camellia (Camellia nitissima).

In order to allow the visitors to appreciate more species, NTU Experimental Forest Office invites several flora associations in Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County to take part in the event. More than two hundred plants will be jointly presented in the expo.

Phoenix Nature Education Park is located in the Phoenix piedmont. On the first day of the expo, the expo makes its début with the company of mountain clouds and mists. The camellias in such a misty stage become more beautiful and tenderer. Several hundred visitors come to join the event.

NTU Experimental Forest Office points out, about three hundred plants of sakura trees, including Kawazu Sakura, Yoshino Sakura and Yama Sakura, grow in the park as well. If the visitors are lucky, they may witness the blossoming during the Chinese New Year period.
