[Defense-Tech] National Cheng Kung University Processes Images of North Korean Rocket

North Korea's rocket launching draws much international tensity. Since 28th-Mar. (2009) on, National Space Organization (NSPO) kept taking pictures of Chosun Peninsula. Up to 5th-Apr., four clear images have been taken. The image taken one hour earlier than the launching on 5th-Apr. is especially remarkable. Associate Professor Cheng-Chien LIU (Dept. of Earth Sciences, National Cheng Kung University) uses his own image processing system to produce a color fused image with 2-meter resolution, and has it contrasted with American commercial satellite Quick Bird's old satellite picture of the same area (taken on 3rd-Apr., 2003) in order to analyze the new constructions in Musudan-ri within the six years. With MIT's simulation result of trajectory calculations, LIU presents the construction details in the rocket site Musudan-ri and the 3D image of the simulated trajectory of the rocket. The potential impact of the rocket launching in Musudan-ri, North Korea, on the safety of Japan and the United States is vividly shown.

Picture 1: C.-C. LIU's color fused image, adopting NSPO's image (5th-Apr., 2009) in contrast with Quick Bird's (3rd-Apr. ,2003), shows the new construction in Musudan-ri (in red circles).

Picture 2: The combination of C.-C. LIU's fused image and Google Earth shows the terrain around the rocket site in 3D image.

Picture 3: Applying the model of trajectory simulation by MIT, the trajectory course is shown.

Picture 4: Simulated 3D image of the trajectory of the launched rocket. Trajectory in red, civil aviation course in blue.

Picture 5: Rocket passing by toward the air of Japan. After the first section of fuel tank is out and dropped in the East Ocean (white zone 1), the rocket crosses over Japan and finally falls in North Pacific Ocean (white zone 2) 3000 km away from Musudan-ri.

Picture 6: if the trajectory could be extended further, it would reach Hawaii.
