[Infotech & Network] Taiwan's Internet Users Keep Rising

The nation's Internet penetration rate reach 68.94 percent last year, while South Korea's 77.1 percent, Japan's 73.85 percent, Hong Kong's 66 percent and Singapore's 58.59 percent, a survey by Taiwan Network Information Center showed on 17th-Feb., 2009.

“In the Asia Pacific region, Taiwan wan definitely ranks somewhere between No.3 and No. 5,” Liang Te-shin (梁德馨), an associate professor at Fu Jen Catholic University's department of statistics and information science, said. But, she added, an exact ranking is unavailable for the participating countries apply different metrics in evaluating Internet usage.

The center's survey polled about 15.82 million individual Internet users nationwide (68.94 percent of Taiwan population) last year. The figure was changed from 2007's 15.55 million people. The local household Internet penetration rate reached 75.46 percent (5.64 million households) last year, with the highest concentration in Taipei and Kaohsiung. 72.99 percent of households used ADSL, while 8.69 percent cable modem. About 73 percent of the nation's male population used the Web, compared with 68.89 percent for females. 15 to 19-year-olds make up the primary user group, with a penetration rate of 99.45 percent, while 22.77 percent of those above 55 years old go online.

Another remark the statistics showed is the penetration of mobile Internet users, defined as using 3.5 G high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) technology to access the Internet, increased two percent from 1.15 million to 1.55 million, accounting for 7.8 percent of total domestic Internet users.

台灣國內網路普及率去年達68.94％，相較於南韓的77.1％、日本 73.85％、香港66％以及新加坡58.59％，台灣網路資訊中心於2009年2月17日發表的一份數據顯示。

「亞太地區，台灣的排比肯定座落在第三與第五名之間」，輔仁大學統計資訊系副教授梁德馨表示，不過她說目前還沒有一份精確的排比，因為各國之間使用不同的統計矩陣來估算網路使用率。

該中心的研究數據統計去年台灣全國的網路個人使用者達一千五百八十二萬人，約佔總人口的68.94 %，比2007年的一千五百五十五萬人略為增加。去年家用網路普及律達75.46%，約有五百六十四萬個家庭用戶，以台北與高雄最為集中，其中72.99%的用戶使用ADSL，而8.69%的用戶使用有線電視網路。男性網路使用者大約佔有男性總人口的73%，女性網路使用者佔女性總人口68.89%。年齡分布中，15至19歲的用戶為主要使用族群，佔有99.45%普及率，而年齡55歲以上的人口中，只有22.77%的人口上網。

另一項數據中值得注意的部份是行動網路使用者的普及率有增加趨勢。行動網路使用者是指使用3.5 G高速網路技術（HSDPA）上網的人，人數由2007年的一百一十五萬增加到去年的一百五十五萬，是所有私用網路使用者的7.8%。
