加拿大國家研究院(National Research Council, NRC)開發一種翻譯工具，估計每年能為加拿大翻譯產業節省數百萬加元。NRC已經把WeBiText 授權給蒙特婁市(Montreal)的Terminotix公司，使翻譯人員能上網快速搜索之前翻譯過的術語和用詞，以找出最適合目前工作使用的用語。

翻譯人員會花費時間尋找相等的技術用詞，而易於使用的工具能節省翻譯人員每天許多時間。在渥太華(Ottawa)的NRC研究員Alain Désilets表示：「我們知道技術改變立刻就有幫助。」這是因為Désilets的團隊了解翻譯人員真正的需要。

在2007年的春季，Désilets與魁北克大學渥太華分校(Université du Québec en Outaouais)的夥伴Louise Brunette, Christianne Melançon及Geneviève Patenaude開始觀察在加拿大及歐洲不同產業的專業翻譯人員的工作情形。他們發現，翻譯人員最久花了10分鐘在各個不同網站搜尋，比較字的用法。這個過程是很緩慢且令人沮喪的，也依賴翻譯人員的專業知識找出在該領域內最佳網站的「等義」用字。

快速瀏覽網頁
WeBiText 的構想是能便於快速瀏覽加拿大政府和其他網站的數千萬個網頁，自動搜索相等的用字或用詞。Désilets表示：「我們知道這項工具會像手套一樣適合。」

NRC倡議支持聯邦政府2008年到2013年的加拿大雙語準則(Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality 2008-2013)，此準則為促進官方語言策略。然而由於WeBiText 讓用戶能用30種語言查詢，在未來肯定還會有更多種語言，遠超出了其原來的目標。這項工具中的語言包括因紐特語(Inuktitut)、克里奧爾語(Creole)、立陶宛語(Lithuanian)，每天會收到1千位用戶約1萬次的查詢。它也能輕易客製化以符合翻譯的特定需求。

根據專業翻譯人員的成本資訊(cost information)和上述的使用次數，NRC估計WeBiText每年為加拿大翻譯產業節省約330萬加元的工作時間。預計翻譯人員更熟悉這項工具時，會節省更多。需要以一種以上的語言進行編輯或寫作的翻譯人員、作家、術語專家及編輯們，也可以享有WeBiText不貴的年度訂閱價格。

出口潛力
Terminotix的總裁Jean-François Richard 表示：「WeBiText可以在加拿大境外使用，由於它支援許多語言，它會成為公司重要的出口潛力。」

根據幫助技術商業化的NRC業務發展主任Michel Mellinger的說法，WeBiText的構想很簡單，但它的運作卻很複雜。他很高興NRC在相對短的時間內創造了一套可以商業化的產品。

Mellinger表示：「使用這項服務的翻譯人員的生產力和工作滿意度已經是顯著提升。翻譯想要製作好的翻譯作品，這項寶貴的工具能幫助他們騰出一些時間，專注於生產高品質的作品。」

因紐特語翻譯成英語

NRC的研究人員在西班牙語、德語及令人驚訝的威爾斯語(Welsh)取得較好的成果。這項系統還可以用因紐特語，這要感謝NRC的Benoit Farley的努力，建立數個因紐特語的搜尋工具。這是這項計畫的重要取向，因為之前翻譯人員缺乏工具幫助他們將因紐特語翻成英語。WeBiText有提供音節或拉丁字母形式的因紐特語。

第 1 條                 

本準則依國土測繪法第三十條規定訂定之。

第 2 條                 

標準地名之譯寫，以音譯為原則。
標準地名含有屬性名稱時，該屬性名稱採英文意譯方式譯寫。
屬性名稱與標準地名整體視為一專有名稱時，仍採音譯方式譯寫。
前項屬性名稱，指描述標準地名性質之名稱。

第 3 條                 

標準地名中具有方向性者，採英文意譯方式譯寫；具有代碼或序數者，以
阿拉伯數字譯寫。

第 4 條                 

標準地名之譯寫，因當地歷史、語言、風俗習慣、宗教信仰、國際慣用或
其他特殊原因，經中央主管機關核定者，不受第二條之限制。

第 5 條                 

標準地名之譯寫，採第一個字母大寫，其餘字母小寫，除下列情形外，各
單字間應以連續不間斷之方式書寫：
一、非首字之中文譯寫後第一個字母為 a、o、e 時，與前單字間以隔音
符號「’」連接。
二、採音譯與意譯不同方式譯寫時，單字間以空格相隔。

第 6 條                 

行政區域及行政編組屬性名稱之譯寫方式，例示如下：
一、省：Province。
二、市：City。
三、縣：County。
四、鄉、鎮：Township。
五、區：District。
六、村（里）：Village 。
七、鄰：Neighborhood。

第 7 條                 

自然地理實體屬性名稱之譯寫方式，例示如下：
一、平原：Plain 。
二、盆地：Basin 。
三、島嶼：Island。
四、群島：Islands 。
五、列嶼：Archipelago 。
六、礁：Reef。
七、沙洲：Sand Bar。
八、岬角： Cape 。
九、山：Mountain。
十、山脈：Mountains 。
十一、峰：Peak。
十二、河、溪：River 。
十三、湖、潭：Lake。

第 8 條                 

街道屬性名稱之譯寫方式，例示如下：
一、大道：Boulevard 或縮寫為 Blvd.。
二、路：Road 或縮寫為 Rd.。
三、街：Street 或縮寫為 St.。
四、巷：Lane 或縮寫為 Ln.。

第 9 條                 

具地標意義公共設施屬性名稱之譯寫方式，例示如下：
一、政府：Hall。
二、公所、事務所：Office。
三、橋：Bridge。
四、寺、廟、庵、觀、堂、宮、道院：Temple。
五、教堂：Church。
六、祠：Shrine。
七、機場：Airport 。
八、港：Port。
九、水庫：Reservoir 。
十、車站：Station 。
十一、停車場：Parking Lot 。
十二、醫院：Hospital。
十三、公園：Park。
十四、圳：Canal 。
十五、溝：Ditch 。
十六、池、塘、埤、陂： Pond 。

本準則自發布日施行。
