We invite you to apply to our NEH Summer Institute, “Investigating<br />
Consciousness: Buddhist and Contemporary Philosophical Perspectives.”<br />
<br />
Consciousness Studies is central to philosophy, religious studies and cognitive<br />
neuroscience. It has also been a focus for productive cross-cultural research<br />
drawing together scholars from the Euro-American and Buddhist philosophical<br />
traditions. The recent flourishing of the study of consciousness in the West<br />
has been so productive because it draws on such diverse  philosophical and<br />
psychological roots, from phenomenology to semantics to neurophysiology. The<br />
nascent interaction with the Indian and Tibetan Buddhist tradition, a tradition<br />
as old, and as sophisticated as the European tradition, and just as vigorous<br />
today, is contributing further new ideas to the philosophical study of<br />
consciousness. This NEH Summer Institute addresses this cross-cultural<br />
philosophical dialogue.<br />
<br />
Some of the world’s foremost philosophers of mind, phenomenologists,<br />
philosophers of cognitive science, and specialists in Indian and Buddhist<br />
philosophy will participate as institute faculty. Early career scholars are<br />
particularly encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from scholars working<br />
on topics in the philosophy of mind, from any tradition and period, in<br />
particular those working primarily in the Western tradition who are interested<br />
in what the Buddhist tradition might have to offer, as well as those interested<br />
most specifically in Indian and Buddhist philosophy, who wish to engage with<br />
contemporary conversations in Western philosophy of mind, cognitive science and<br />
phenomenology. We hope to attract participants representing a wide variety of<br />
subdisciplines of philosophy, cognitive science and religious studies, and who<br />
take a wide range of approaches to this topic. We also encourage applications<br />
from graduate students currently writing dissertations on topics in these<br />
areas.<br />
<br />
The NEH provides $2,100 as a taxable stipend to each person chosen to<br />
participate in this Summer Institute. Stipends are intended to help cover<br />
travel expenses to and from the project location, books and other research<br />
expenses, and living expenses for the duration of the period spent in<br />
residence.<br />

本研討課目標有三：<br />
一、認識印度佛教知識論（量論），特別是陳那的系統。<br />
二、認識印度佛教知識論的漢傳發展，特別是六世紀的慧遠和七世紀的慧沼的詮釋。<br />
三、訓練漢傳量論的經典研讀。<br />

課程大綱<br />
自二十世紀以來，佛教知識論（量論）的研究成為國際佛學界的顯學，其中特別以陳那和法稱為研究焦點。由於量論的第一手文獻主要存在於少數的梵典和大量的藏文論疏，造成該領域為印藏佛教（Indo-Tibetan Buddhism）學者所獨領風騷，相對地，漢傳量論則乏人問津，除了早期的少數學者，如Tucci、宇井伯壽、Frauwallner之外，並未受到應有的重視。有鑑於此，本課程擬補足這項不足，開發漢傳佛教量論的研究。本課程擬選讀二項文獻：一、慧遠（523-592）《大乘義章》卷十〈三量智義〉，二、慧沼 (648-714)《大乘法苑義林章補闕》〈二量章〉。這二份文獻分別代表漢傳量論舊學和漢傳量論新學的觀點，前者屬於地論師系統，後者屬於玄奘系統。若和現代學者所重建的印藏佛教知識論相較，更可看出漢傳佛教知識論的特色。揭顯漢傳佛教知識論的特色，是本課程的主要目的。<br />

這個平台包含二個介面、三個部份： <br />
<br />
介面- <br />
主題分類系統介面：控制「主題」的創設、歸類與再歸類，並以「主題」整合平台三個部份。展示在「<a href=http://buddhica.mepopedia.com/>對話地圖 Dialog Map</a>」。<br />
個人設定介面： 登入後在論壇畫面右上角點擊「設定」，包含一般環境設定、追蹤主題、我的好友、我的群組、我的私人信箱等等功能。<br />
<br />
平台區塊- <br />
百科：所有成員針對某「主題」共同編輯的經驗分享百科。 <br />
論壇：所有成員針對某「主題」進行論壇式討論的園地。 <br />
部落格：所有成員的個人空間，專屬部落格 （介面建制中，目前大家在平台上發表過的所有談論、文章都已能自動匯集到各自的部落格中） 。<br />
<br />
操作方式- <br />
一、註冊： <br />
        請先到「對話空間」點選「login」進入註冊/登入畫面。註冊之後就可以使用平台互動了。 <br />
<br />
二、創設主題： <br />
        1. 登入後於「對話空間」下方空白欄輸入欲新設主題，並按下 create<br />
        2.. 點選現有「對話地圖」上既有之「主題」，以將新增之「主題」歸類到該主題之下， 便<br />
完成主題之創設。 <br />
        P.S. 主題創設完成，便自動生成一專屬百科頁面，可供共同編輯，也自動生成一專屬論壇， <br />
可供討論。 <br />
<br />
三、重新歸類主題： <br />
       1. 登入後於「對話空間」點選右上角的「edit map」 ，進入編輯畫面 <br />
       2. 點選「對話地圖」上既有主題中欲重新歸類之主題，抽出該主題以便重新歸類 <br />
       3. 點選現有「對話地圖」上既有之「主題」，以將待重新歸類之「主題」歸類到該主題之下， <br />
便完成主題之重新歸類。 <br />

四、編輯百科： <br />
        1. 登入後，選擇任一既有之「主題」，在畫面空白處點兩下或點選右上角的「edit page」便可進入該主題之「百科編輯頁面」 <br />
        2. 在特定主題之「百科編輯頁面」中，編輯完成後， 可以選擇「preview」、「post message」或「cancel」。 <br />

<i>NCCU Campus News</i> (2009/10/17) Professor Chen-kuo LIN, Dept. of Philosophy at National Chengchi University, has obtained NSC's sponsorship for the three-year talent cultivation project "Indian Buddhist Thought in the 6th-7th Century China." Via the project, NCCU will invite many globally outstanding scholars of Buddhist studies to form an international workshop.<br />
<br />
Chen-kuo LIN points out, Buddhist studies have been through rapid expansion during the late eighties to nineties, and now an academic community with certain scale has been formed in the world. Buddhism is one major pan-Asian religion as well as philosophical tradition; linguistic studies in terms of Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese, are deeply involved. Buddhist studies have become a field highly international and cross-disciplinary. Europe is the current center for Buddhist studies; Japan and the US are chasing on behind. The findings in these countries are very influential to Taiwan scholars. Chen-kuo LIN says, NCCU has comprehensive academic groups in this field, including Department of Philosophy and Department of Religion etc.; it also has scholars deep into Indian Buddhism. Hence NCCU is very suitable to carry out the task of integrating the relevant academic capacities in Taiwan. The project aims at introducing Taiwan's Buddhist studies to the world. With the topic "Indian Buddhist Thought in the 6th-7th Century China," NCCU invites most of the significant scholars of Buddhist studies in the world to form an international research team, also closely cooperated with the local scholars. The result will be presented in form of monographs in English.<br />
