CNA (2010/10/28) The Taiwan government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with U.S. chipmaker heavyweight Intel Thursday to collaborate on cloud computing technology and set up the company's first research and development center in the country.

Intel said it will provide technical and training resources for two leading Taiwanese companies in the information and communication sector -- Inventec and Wistron -- which have been recommended by the Taiwan Cloud Computing Association (TCCA) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to develop cloud data center offerings.

Intel President and CEO Paul OTELLINI said at a press conference that he sees no better partners for the company than Taiwan's IT industry because no-one else has the same track record in commercializing innovation.

OTELLINI also announced that Intel and the National Science Council (NSC) will work with a leading local university to establish a research center to strengthen Taiwan's academic position in the emerging connected embedded devices segment. The three parties will invest a total of up to NT$750 million (US$23.5 million) over the coming three to five years in the project.

Meanwhile that same day, the U.S. company also signed a cooperation agreement with the country's top telecom operator, Chunghwa Telecom, as part of its efforts to build up the cloud computing industry.
