<i>NTU Newsletter</i> (Issue 1022) & <i>Taiwan Lihpao</i> (2010/10/12) During the IEEE/RSJ 2010 International Conference (IROS 2010) on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2010), hosted by the Department of Electrical Engineering, NTU, several new robots will make their debut to the public. At the meanwhile, 2010 Taipei International Robot Show (TIROS 2010) will also take place at Taipei World Trade Center between October 19 22. On October 12, NTUEE held a press conference. The General Chair of IROS 2010, as well as NTUEE's Lifetime Distinguished Professor, Ren C. LUO showed up in the event and gave introduction to the scenario of the conference and the robot show. Besides, two new models of intelligent robots innovated by NTU were introduced to the public as well. Ren C. LUO also told the press, more than one thousand professional visitors to the event are expected, in which about four hundred experts from the robotic giant country Japan will be included as well.

The U.S. Congress has demanded the U. S. Department of Defense to mechanize one third of its land forces for the objectives such as loading or rescuing. Beside of the defense needs, medical treatments and rehabilitation will also be the areas in which the robots will be designed to serve. Since seventies when robotics was introduced in Japan, the robot R&D has never stopped. In 2005, Aichi Expo was themed with robots, during which models for reception, tour-guiding and cleaning were presented.

Ren C. LUO said, the aging population in Taiwan kept growing, so the demand for the in-home care intelligent robots must gradually increase in the following years. With the bases of Taiwan's electrical, software design and automation industries, the robotic industry in Taiwan is very promising.

NTU's forthcoming Center for the Robotic Research (trans. temp.) will sign cooperation contract with Willow Garage. According to Ren. C. LUO, the company has formed an alliance with another eleven internationally recognized universities. The contract between NTU and the company implies the formation of the alliance between NTU and these schools.

The two new models of robots NTU will present in this IROS include an anthropomorphic robot whose head is designed to mimic the 27-year-old Einstein that can make various facial expressions with the 36 motors embedded inside; the other is an intelligent robot Monika which can give tour-guides or secure service.
