[Food Security] APEC Food Security Forum Takes Place in Taiwan: A Regional Food Cooperation System in Demand (<a href=http://mepopedia.com/forum/read.php?127,7392>Chinese Version</a>)

<i>RTI</i> (2010/08/18) APEC Food Security Forum is hosted in Taipei during August 18 to 20, gathering representatives from about twenty countries or areas, including Australia, Chile, China, Japan, etc., to discuss about the food security policies in the Asia-Pacific area. Wu-hsiung CHEN, the head of the Council of Agriculture (COA), expressed the state will at the opening address to facilitate the regional food reserves mechanism, especially with rice and wheat, so that the food security among all the APEC members could be maintained.

COA obtained the hosting of APEC Food Security Forum from APEC Agricultural Technical Cooperation Working Group in last june. COA said, the present food security cooperation mechanism only covered East Asia area, South Asia area and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN); COA wished to urge the participants in the forum to extend the scope of the food security mechanism to all APEC members. As Wu-hsiung CHEN pointed out at the opening address, it is expected that with the forum the agreement to a mechanism for rice and wheat reserves in the Asia-Pacific area could be reached so that the APEC members' food security could be assured.

He said, the food security mechanism for the Asia-Pacific area is proposed by us (Taiwan); we wish to use various measures to promise the regional food security, for instance, collective food reserves, reciprocal food aids, etc. These measures are the goals this forum tries to deliberate during these days (trans. temp.).

The result of this forum will be submitted to the Ministerial Meeting on Food Security to be held in October in Niigata, Japan.
