<i>RTI</i> (2011/03/15) The Fukushima radiation leak worries Taiwan people a lot. Deputy Minister of Atomic Energy Council (AEC) Der-Jhy SHIEH urges people not to panic too much again on March 14, stressing that the radiation leak in Japan is believed not to directly influence on Taiwan, and human beings actually are exposing to natural trace radiation particles in the daily life. As long as the exposure is limited in the safe range, the radiactivity should not cause physical injuries.
AEC Deputy Minister Der-Jhy SHIEH further explained on March 15 in a KMT press conference that the Fukushima leak actually refers to the radiation particles leaked from the damaged fuel rods in the reaction core into the air together with the vapour, and hence the radiactivity is quite low. He said, we have coexisted with natural micro-radiation materials for millions of years, and as long as within the safe range, we need not to panic about the radiactivity. Besides, the reaction core is contained in a pressure vessel, added to which are also two layers of containments; even the melted and damaged core should not necessarily cause considerable radiation leakage.
Der-Jhy SHIEH said, AEC website updates the radiation monitoring information once every five minutes. The normal range is 0.2 micro-sieverts/h.
